Tips On How To Overcome Anxiety Without Medication

Overcoming Anxiety without Medication

Living with anxiety can be a painful and frustrating experience. At times, the intense feelings can get the better of a person, and blow things out of proportion at home or even at one’s workplace. Medication may not always be the right answer, especially in our society where the use of pills is on a rampage. After all, consumption of over the counter pills comes with the risk of side effects and chemical dependence. Fortunately, there are many natural ways to tame one’s anxiety without spending a dime. I found this article on how to overcome anxiety without medication which was inspirational for me to create this article.

1. Take control of your life

Feeling powerless and hopeless tends to be the way of life for individuals suffering from intense anxiety. One often struggles to control things. An anxiety affected person tends to believe that all the events happening in their life is out of their control and they can do nothing about it. To get rid of these hopeless feelings, self-empowerment is the key. One’s best bet over here would be to take a conscious and determined decision to do something about the situation instead of just thinking about it all day long.

2. Laugh it off

Laughter can reduce anxiety, but it can be hard to laugh when anxious.
Even if you have to fake laughter, do it. A good laugh can offer instant results because laughter gets to work almost immediately. Laughter tames stress hormones, and as a result helps one deal with anxiety. Also, it increases oxygen supply in our body which leads to relaxed muscles, so it becomes easier to deal with the symptoms of anxiety.

3. Exercise

Training for just 30 minutes a day can do wonders to our health. This can be an excellent tool that can teach you how to overcome anxiety without medication. Studies have shown that exercise has calming effect on our mind. Regular exercise can not only be a confidence booster but can improve our mood to a great extent. Exercise can reduce stress, improve self-esteem, promote good sleep and keep a person fit and healthy. If you don’t feel comfortable training with weights, start off with early morning walks.

4. Get rid of the caffeine

Not many people realize that caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, soda and energy drinks can aggravate the condition by worsening the symptoms of anxiety. Caffeine increases our heart rate and in some cases can also cause panic attacks. Many over the counter pills also contain caffeine. If you are unable to eliminate tea or coffee completely from your life, limit their intake. Instead of 4 coffees a day, have 2. Gradually, reduce your intake to 1 and then try to stop it completely.

5. Make the most of the day

Take some time for yourself. Individuals who take care of themselves get involved in productive habits such as yoga, meditation, prayers, reading, spa and socialization. Indulge in self-talk and spell out as much positivity as you can. Think of the bigger picture and always be grateful for all the things that you have in life. Seeds of discouragement do not flourish in a heart filled with gratitude. So, work on improving your state of mind by indulging in positive activities, surrounding and people.

My Struggle With Severe Anxiety

It all started when I was a young boy and my parents flew away for the summer, I was left alone with my grandmother for a few months and I hated every minute of it. My grandmothers house was very old and she never had an air conditioner so it was always roasting hot in the summer time. One day I was sitting alone in the guest room thinking about my life when all of a sudden I got this sudden feeling that I was going to die, my heart started pounding so fast I didn't know what to do. I couldn't breathe and felt like my chest was getting tighter. This came out of absolutely nowhere and I was pretty convinced I was having a heart attack. I went to go tell my grandmother and she told me that I was fine and that I was just overreacting over nothing. If she could only feel what I was going through she would understand. After hours of feeling like this I finally convinced her to take me to the hospital. My heart was beating so fast still the doctors told me it was the highest they had ever seen. They told me I had just had my first anxiety attack and said congratulations to me like I had just won some type of prize or something. They gave me some anti anxiety meds and sent me on my way home.

That was the very first time I had an anxiety attack, after that day my life changed completely and I have been having attacks frequently. That was 17 years ago, I lived with anxiety for a solid 15 years and at one point I actually considered killing myself. I know its stupid and I never went through with it because I know its wrong. Today I am living a happy and healthy life. my anxiety is almost fully gone and I only have attacks every now and then. I have figured out breathing techniques that helped me to overcome everything. Nothing feels better than overcoming a demon that you have been dealing with since you were a child, absolutely nothing!
